Beauty Uses for Coconut Oil

So in my mind coconut oil is the end all be all of multitasking beauty products. Its fatty acids and richness make it amazing for everything from hair and skin all the way to oral and holistic treatments. There isn’t much coconut oil can’t do, the uses are innumerable. I basically use it for everything besides cooking… I’m not a cook, I can’t cook, and I try to avoid it as much as possible but, I hear good things about actually using it for cooking as well. I can’t say enough good things about it because it’s such a cheap and efficient way to keep your beauty regiment on point. I figured I’d share a few of my favorite uses for coconut oil just so I can shout out my obsessions out into the world.

Scalp Treatment: I have a very dry scalp especially after I dye my hair or when the weather starts to change. To help soothe this problem I just melt a few tablespoons of coconut oil and massage it into my scalp.  I put my hair into a shower cap to avoid any dripping and let it sit for about an hour before washing it out. Afterwards my scalp feels nourished and a lot less irritated.

Deep Conditioning Treatment: The deep conditioning treatment works much like the scalp treatment except instead of focusing only on my scalp and roots I saturate all of my hair with the coconut oil. It soften and nourishes the hair leaving it shiny and more healthy looking.

Eye Makeup Remover: Stubborn waterproof mascara doesn’t even stand a chance against this stuff. A little bit of melted coconut oil on a cotton pad disolves makeup with ease. Not only does it work better than most makeup removers I have ever used but, it also moisturizes while it’s working.

Oil Pulling: Oil pulling is a bit of a new one for me but, it has become a soothing part of my morning routine. Just pop a tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth and swish it around for 10 to 15 minutes in order to pull toxins out of your mouth. Doing so leads to stronger teeth, jaws, and gums along with whiter teeth and other holistic benefits such as clearer skin and increased energy. It is best to do this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. After you’re done you should brush or rinse out your mouth so that the toxins don’t reabsorb into your body.

Bath Oil: Using coconut oil as a bath oil is an amazingly soothing way to moisturize your skin and relax at the same time. Put a tablespoon or two into the bath and just let it melt into the water. It moisturizes your skin while balancing out your body’s oils and soothing dryness… It also allows you to smell like a coconut, which is always quite delightful.

Face Mask: Putting oil on your face seems a little daunting at first (or at least it does to me) but, this treatment works really well for calming excessive oil production and getting rid of any dry patches. I just put a pretty thick layer of the coconut oil all over my face and leave it on for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off. It leaves my skin feeling nourished without leaving any greasy or oily residue behind. It also can be left on and used as a night cream because the anti-oxidants within it are great for reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

There are tons of other ways to use coconut oil as well such as frizz tamer, stretch mark cream, cuticle oil, and shaving cream.  It’s even an ingredient in some DIY surf sprays but, I’ll get into that in another post because I’m pretty sure no one wants me to rant about coconut oil anymore right now.
